It’s time women’s voices were heard 

Did you vote for one of the resolutions on the shortlist? It was a difficult decision wasn’t it, as all had a real resonance with the key issues of the moment. 

I continue to be intrigued by the fact that once a resolution becomes a campaign, that it stays ‘on the book’, as it were, for ever. It’s surprising though, and shocking even, that so many maintain their relevance for years, even decades, isn’t it? 

The one I am particularly thinking about is the Equal Pay for Equal Work campaign of 1943, equally relevant to today, which then leads me to a broader consideration of all aspects of equality for women, and the particular significance of issues of equality for all women at times of crisis. 

As the COVID-19 pandemic took on epic pro-portions, it became increasingly obvious that it was having a world-wide, momentous, detrimental effect on all aspects of life, and most markedly on that of women. 

Perhaps the most significant impact has been an economic one. In the first round of UK job losses triggered by COVID-19, for example, it was the low paid, part-time jobs, mostly done by women, that were the first to go. Even if one was lucky enough to 

keep a job, then lockdown provided the added challenge of how to care for children whose schools and nurseries were closed when they still had to work, and away from the home. Throughout the pandemic this has been a critical challenge for very many women. 

Another increasing spectre has been that of domestic violence. Whilst this is not exclusive to women, it has become a significant factor in the lives of many women, whose time in lockdown has been coloured by pain and fear, as well as secrecy and shame. 

Many of you will have followed the story of Sally Challen, who was a fellow WI member, and the No More Violence Against Women campaign. Both have given a forceful voice to women throughout the pandemic. 

Access to both education and healthcare has also taken a backseat for women during the last year, not only in the UK, but also across the world. 

During a crisis, as is inevitable, everything rolls backwards, but as the world slowly begins to rebuild itself as the rollout of the vaccine has an impact on the virus, world leaders should be encouraged to build a different way back and to address the lack of opportunity, in all its guises, for women. 

Many of us were part of that generation that pursued a career and ran a family simultaneously, aspiring to be that ‘superstar’, but never quite achieving it, with little support, no pre-five nursery care, and no maternity leave or pension rights if one had a part-time job. We must not return to such a model. 

I believe that there is a real role today for the ladies of the WI, a new dawn, just as there was after World War II, when the WI played a significant role in raising living standards for many, and much, much, more. 

The WI gives women a voice, it provides space and facilitates open and informed discussion. We should take this opportunity to raise once more the issues around, and to maintain and improve, gender equality. To hold a mirror to the real world and hold our leaders to account. 

Are we happy to sit back and let the decisions about our new future be dominated by middle aged, upper class, Oxbridge educated, white men? On December 27, the UK Prime Minister vowed ‘to focus on levelling up the country’ and to ‘deliver for people who feel left behind.’ He called on us to ‘unite and level up.’ Are we to heed this call and hold our politicians to account to the greater good of women? I hope so. 

Very many current problems for women are a direct result of deep-seated attitudes that need to be re-examined. There is systemic injustice in our society that needs to be challenged. It is our role and duty to prompt and steer change and quickly, to challenge what we are prepared to put up with, to be at every table, in every room. We need to have a clear voice and share in the decision making on issues that make a difference to women’s everyday lives. 

We, as women of the world, are entitled to dreams as big as we wish. We are entitled to our destiny, entitled to speak on behalf of the whole world and we should be recognised and applauded for it. So let us, as WI members, be an integral part of that change and work towards a post COVID-19 world that is characterised by equality of opportunity, fun and joy for all women.

The 2021 Eileen Bowler Competition – Update

Something to keep you occupied right now — the 2021 Eileen Bowler Competition! 

This year it is for a child’s outfit made from an article bought from a charity shop. You may add any sewing accessories and a little additional fabric if you wish, but it must make up less than a quarter of the total. A picture of the original article must be included with your entry. 

Your finished outfit should be sent (or delivered if you are local) to;

Ever thought of becoming an Adviser? 

Have you ever thought of becoming a WI Adviser? The next training course starts next month and if you want to apply be quick — applications should be in by January 4. But it’s something you might want to think about for the future. 

Advisers are responsible for forming, suspending and closing WIs. They also play a key role in supporting WIs, helping them to grow and promote membership. 

Training is delivered as a blended learning course using webinars and face-to-face training but the latter reduced from 6 nights; split into two 2-night residentials (dependent on government advice and local restrictions). 

If you are interested contact Carol Gartrell (Federation chairman) or Angie Leach (chair of Membership) in the first instance as the federation pays the £360 course fee.

New job for New Year? Use that talent for figures! 

New Year, how about a new job for someone who has a talent for figures? 

An appeal in September’s SWIN for more members to become Independent Financial Examiners (IFEs) brought some positive responses. But as our Federation Treasurer Sheena Landgraf says, you can never have too much of a good thing, and having more examiners to call on would be very welcome. 

So what does a Surrey Independent Financial Examiner do? Perhaps you are a retired bank employee, accountant or are simply good with figures, and would like to be able to give something back to the WI without getting involved in committees, meetings etc. 

All WIs must have their annual financial statements examined by an IFE. In some cases WIs use someone known to them locally who is qualified to perform the examination. However many have to rely on the Federation to provide them with an IFE. And that’s where you, or someone you know, can come in. 

Members of this small, but select, team each examine the financial statements for several WIs to make sure the figures presented to members at the annual meeting are in accordance with the objects of the WI and a correct summary of the transactions in the year. 

As most Surrey WIs have September year ends and November annual meetings, there is a flurry of work in October and early November but not much at any other time of the year. A small fee is paid to examiners for undertaking the work. 

You do not have to be, or have been, a WI Treasurer or even a WI member; you may have a recently retired partner with the right qualifications who could be volunteered…or a friend with time on his or her hands? All you need is a basic understanding of spread- sheets, a reasonable competence with numbers and (essential) an enquiring mind. Training is provided to help you to understand WI rules and objectives, our Treasurers’ Handbook and the spreadsheet.

Subscription Rates 2021

The annual subscription rate for 2021 will be £44, payable from April 1. The table shows what new members joining the WI from April 2021 for the first time, or who have not previously been a member of any WI in the past ten years, will pay, depending on the quarter in which they join, and how the subscriptions are distributed between WIs, Federations and the NFWI.

Dual members pay £21.60 to their second WI. There is no pro-rata rate for dual members. The new rates mean that the WI share will in- crease by 50p, the Federation share by 30p and the NFWI share by 20p.

Something to look forward to in 2021 

The Entertainment, Leisure and Fund Raising Committee has been working tirelessly during lockdown to investigate virtual events for members. The following events have been booked provisionally, so please save the dates. Full details will be in February’s magazine and watch out for them on Eventbrite.

  • Thursday, February 18: An Insight into Forensic Science with Hayley Scott, 6-7pm; £5.00
  • Thursday, February 25: An introduction to painting with acrylics with Alice May Tompkins, 6pm-7pm, £6.50 
  • Monday, March 8: The Birds of Surrey with Alan Sharpe of the RSPB. 6-7pm. £5.00

Also in the pipeline are: 

  • Virtual tours of places in the UK with perhaps a venture overseas; 
  • ?Art tutorials, from taster to refresher classes; portraiture, landscape, buildings and architecture, town, country and coastal scenes; 
  • ?Live talks/interviews with authors.

A coffee a week can do so much 

ACWW would like you to consider donating a small amount of money regularly — as you would if you were attending our monthly meetings. 

Pennies for Friendship was based on small donations from individuals over a vast membership which can sustain the work of the ACWW. Together we can achieve more. 

ACWW does not receive any government funding, nor does it rely on grants or funding partnerships with bigger organisations. It is fully reliant on its membership and supporters to continue with its vital work improving the lives of rural women around the world. 

In many ways this is a good thing. It means it has the freedom to pursue only the interests of its members, and only in the ways that it knows from more than 90 years of experience will benefit them. 

It is not constrained by funding agreements or government priorities; in fact, it is able to hold governments, companies, and even international bodies to account without any fear, because it knows that its members are the only invested stakeholders.

Wanted: Digital champions to help other WIs 

Have you embraced technology more this year, and do you want to share your newly learned skills? 

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown (nearly) all of us that we need to use the digital world in both our personal and WI lives. 

Members have embraced a number of digital initiatives, from online courses to Facebook, and we want to assist those who are not as comfortable with getting online to develop this important part of their journey. 

The Digital Working Group is looking for members to assist and train other members on how to set up and use the IT facilities that are now or soon to be available within the Federation. 

You must have some IT experience, mostly using Microsoft programmes. Ideally you will need to have experience in set- ting up computers/tablets/mobiles and possibly the Apple equivalents. 

Experience of social media would be great. We will provide training for aspects of work we’d like your help with. 

We are planning to roll out Office 365 to all levels of the Federation. Our Digital Champions will help members get online and learn how to use Office 365 and new email addresses, and be involved with other ex- citing digital projects we’d like to roll out to help members feel more comfortable with the online world. 

The Digital Champion is expected to promote the use of the Federation and NFWI websites, and and MyWI Websites, MCS, social media and Zoom across Surrey, and provide train- ing and assistance where necessary on all things digital.

A mailing will be sent to all WI secretaries at the end of January/beginning of February. We have spent a lot of time working through the information forms provided by WIs to check that the information on MCS is correct, so that these lists are as accurate as possible.
