The right way to run your AGM

By News

Discover the right way to run your AGM — and have fun!

We would like someone from each WI to attend our Annual Meetings Made Easy events, planned for September — ideally a committee member but if not, then someone who can feed back to the committee.

These will be fun, informative sessions to remind everyone of the annual meeting essentials and learn tips from each other to make them enjoyable events. We will run through the election of a committee and a President and discuss annual forms, reviews, reports and anything else you wish to know to help your annual meetings be a great success. Please send someone prepared to have a productive time, sharing with others and exploring just how pink the elastic can be (and not!).

To show you how important we think these events are, we are not charging you to attend (which is why it is an event and not a workshop). All WIs will benefit, from our 100-year olds to our brand new ones.

Please look for your nearest or most convenient venue and find a member to attend. Information on how to book a place will be published in Surrey WI News and on the website in due course. The events will be held on:

  • Tuesday, 8 September: Woodhatch Centre,Whitebeam Drive, Reigate, RH2 7LS, 7pm-9pm
  • Wednesday, 9 September: SFWI HQ, Guildford, 3pm-5pm and from 7pm-9pm
  • Thursday, 10 September: Belmont Bowling Club, Broadlands Avenue, Streatham, SW16 1NA, 7pm-9pm

Tapestry of Camberley Town centre

By News

This fantastic tapestry of Camberley town centre was worked by members of Camberley WI. Following production of the background squares by the wider WI membership, it has taken over a year for the 24 ladies of the craft group to knit, crochet, weave and felt the individual items and then sew them all together.  The result is a detailed representation of the town and surrounding area, populated with people, flora and fauna.

Following its unveiling by the Mayor of Surrey Heath and although not displayed at the Federation’s Annual Council Meeting in March as planned, it will form part of a larger display of other Knit Your Town projects at Wonderwool in South Wales, before finally being displayed in Camberley Library and the town’s Heritage Centre.

What’s New from HQ (April 2020)

By News

The Federation office at 6 Paris is still closed due to the COVID-19 lockdown. Here is some further information on the practical aspects of the office.

Telephone – Please do not leave answer machine messages as the system will not retain them for more than a few days, and as we do not have remote access, we will not get your message.

Emails – The best way to contact us is by email, which is being being monitored and we are able to reply to.

Post – This will be picked up and dealt with as soon as we can get to the office.  How soon this is will depend on when restrictions are lifted.  It might be that once restrictions are lifted then someone can get in and pick up post and arrange banking from home, before we can fully re-open the office.

Please continue to send us your cheques and paperwork, for both membership subscriptions and any outstanding invoices, so that we can process them as soon as we are able to get into the office.  We recognise that with self-isolation there are problems with getting a second signature so if you are concerned about this we understand if you want to wait until restrictions are lifted to make payment.  If you have made a payment online please ensure you have scanned the supporting  paperwork to us.

We have dealt with the refunds for all the smaller events and courses we had to cancel.  Refunds for the Annual Council Meeting and VE Quiz will should be paid out in early April, if the treasurer has sufficient paperwork at home.  The NFWI Annual Meeting refunds will take a little longer as the paperwork for this is in the office.

Please remember that when the office can re-open we will have a lot of catching up to do so we may not be able to get back to as soon as you would like. We will endeavour to respond as soon as we can.

Message from our Federation Chairman (April 2020)

By News

Day by day, the shadow of the Coronavirus looms larger. We are on the brink of an unprecedented health event, unlike anything we have known in our life-time.

The WI has always stood strong in times of crisis. I exhort you to be active in your WIs and your communities, even at a distance, to keep in touch with your members and neighbours, and to offer whatever support, help and daily, remote contact that you can. After all, we can make a difference.

WE ARE THE WI!

The following was written in mid-February, before the COVID-19 epidemic affected our lives.

Will you be the one to blossom in April?

April is the month of comedy, contrast and change. Whether you view this month from the inspirational perspective of Christopher Morley, “April prepares her green traffic light and the world thinks Go,” or the cynical view of Charles Lamb, “Here cometh April again, and as far as I can see the world hath more fools in it than ever,” April is full of surprises. What other month could begin with a day dedicated to
pranks?

April Fool’s Day, a day (or rather morning, don’t be caught out after mid-day) of jolly japes, is a custom shared by many across the world, and in Odessa, is even a public holiday! One of my favourite practical jokes took place on 1st April 1857 when an invitation was posted by the Tower of London to buy tickets to the Annual Ceremony of Washing the Lions. I am sure that you have your own favourite. Whatever your view of the day itself, April is indeed a month of surprises. The spring equinox has passed, the garden and countryside springs into life. It is a time of birth and rebirth, a time of optimism and new beginnings. As I write, late in January, on a grey, damp, chill morning, the earth is beginning to stir. I can see snowdrops, winter aconites, crocuses and the first wood anemones. I can also spot a rather confused camelia and an azalea, both flowering very early, a product of the mild winter, an indicator of climate change?

But as April arrives the world truly blossoms, despite the occasional surprise April shower. At one point in our history, before the Julian calendar replaced the Augustinian one, April 1st was the beginning of the New Year. Those who didn’t follow the change were considered comical, and hence possibly the origin of the April Fool tradition. For the Federation, April is also the start of the year, in that there is a new Board of Trustees with new members and new roles and responsibilities, although SFWI definitely does not fall into the above category! It is a time of change and of opportunity, to move forward, of new plans and strategies, and an enriched future for the Federation.

This, as you will have noticed, is also a time of reflection, renewal and rebirth, for the NFWI as it lays bare its blue-sky thinking to members’ scrutiny and launches its new Vision for the Future under the headings of Bold, Growing, Inclusive and Flexible. Many of you will have heard the NFWI Chairman Lynne Stubbings’ impassioned speech at our recent ACM. Please respond to the consultation if you have not already done so.

Will this also be a time of change for you? For your relationship with the Federation? Might you surprise yourself? Might you join this band of women? The Federation invites you to engage and expand your horizons! Will you participate in a Federation event this year? Will you learn a new skill through one of the many cookery and craft workshops? Will you step up and volunteer at Federation level? We currently need:

  • A Publicity Officer
  • ACWW Representative
  • Human Resources lead
  • An IT Champion

Will your name become attached to one of these roles? I do hope that you will meet the challenge, you are most welcome. The Federation is your oyster.

Carol A. Gartrell, Federation Chairman

April SWIN now available

By News

Glossing over the events which may have to be postponed or cancelled (updates will be shown on the What’s On page) there are still interesting items in this month’s magazine. For instance: Surrey’s lost village, the WI tea towel travelling the world, and a possible food safety and hygiene course.

The April SWIN has been mailed out to all those WIs where it comes direct from the publisher. The person receiving them is requested to try their best to distribute them to members without taking risk to themselves.

You can view it online through your My WI account either directly, or by using the link at the bottom of the Surrey WI News page.

Denman Update

Denman Update – Provided by NFWI

Denman is postponing all courses and specific events that were scheduled to run until 12 April.

Please contact Denman directly if you have a booking to discuss how you wish to proceed. We understand that many of you are concerned about current bookings and may wish to receive a refund, however, we are all conscious of the financial impact this period of closure may have on Denman and therefore, request you to consider postponing your booking to a later date rather than cancelling if this is possible.

Please note that we will review all future courses again in a week’s time and will update you accordingly.

Thank you for your continued support for Denman.
