Join Hazel Will your Tutor at Daphdune Wharf, Guildford.
Come and give it a try. This is a practical introduction to spinning wool on a Crossed spindle.
Hazel will demonstrate how to spin a single thread, ply it to make it thicker and stronger and how to make a skein.
Using your Turkish spindle, you will start spinning singles; then later you will ply these.
Discussion will follow on what to do with spun wool, where to buy roving, washing skeins, felting, weaving etc. You will be able to take home your crossed spindle and some fibres to keep practicing with at home.
Spare balls of wool for plying will be supplied if needed if you are not able to spin sufficient singles. The resultant yarn could then be used to knit, crochet, weave or make your own blend.
On the day you will receive; 1 Crossed Spindle, an amount of naturally coloured plain and mixed coloured wool roving, a small amount of mixed colour/fibre roving to spin and an information sheet.
Drinks and Lunch – Participants to bring their own drinks and lunch, or these may be purchased from the café on site. Café opens at 11.00am.
Risks – Anaphylaxis – ANYONE who is allergic to wool or lanolin should NOT attend this course.
All equipment may have had contact with wool; providing non wool fibres does not exclude this risk as the animal protein will be in the air from the wool spinners.
Parking – There is car parking on site and National Trust members are free. Non members – Charged £5 for 4 hours or £8 for the day.
Cost; £30.00 inclusive of all materials.
