EDUCATION
COOKERY & NUTRITION
Has always been considered a cornerstone of the WI, and Surrey is no exception. These are delivered by an experienced team of WI demonstrators and teachers. Workshops have included bread making, pastry, cakes, biscuits, jams, marmalades, chutneys and pickles. Themed days are also offered: recent ones have covered vegetarian cooking, popular puddings, salads and dressings and even a proper afternoon tea! Members not only get hands-on experience, but gain an understanding of the principles behind the processes they learn and address issues of nutrition – how to adapt recipes to meet dietary requirements, for example. All workshops are conducted in an informal setting – coffee, cake and conversation are a must.
CRAFT WORKSHOPS
Craft workshops are held on a regular basis by local experts in their field. Recent workshops have included willow basket making, art techniques for beginners, tailoring, know your sewing machine, goldwork, wet felting, knitting, jewellery making, machine and ribbon embroidery. The choice is endless. At Craft Activity Days members can try a variety of new skills in a more informal setting, and always with a freshly made lunch.
GARDENING & FLORAL ART
A variety of approaches have been taken to offering differing experiences in Gardening and Floral Art. These have ranged from planting hanging baskets and plant propagation at a garden centre, to making a Christmas door wreath and table decorations. The Summer Celebration Events, held in an ancient barn, have centred on a flower arranging demonstration accompanied by a cream tea or with canapés and bubbles.
