These are a good opportunity to promote the WI, show the public what it does and recruit new members because of the large number of visitors they attract. Three shows located in the centre, east and west of the county each provide us with a marquee – the Surrey County, the Cranleigh and the Edenbridge and Oxted Shows – in return for a fee in one case, and a donation in the others.
Each has its own committee of WI members and because shows must pay for themselves, a fund raising event may be held prior to the show. The committee decides on the competition classes, activities, displays and demonstrations which will take place in the marquee. You may find a WI member demonstrating lace-making, for example; special activities for children and you may be able to buy home-made cakes and preserves.
WI members support the shows by entering the competition classes (some of which the public can enter), and visit, along with the public, to see how their entries fared and admire the quality of craft and other skills on display. WI Advisers are on hand to answer questions about the WI and recruit new members. So if you plan to visit one of these shows, make sure you head for the WI marquee.
On With The Show
The NFWI has published a very useful booklet for show organisers, judges and exhibitors, On With the Show, which tells you all you need to know about shows and entering competitions.
Surrey County Show
The Surrey County Show 2021, which would normally take place on the late Spring Bank Holiday Monday (the last Monday in May) will not be taking place this year because of the uncertainty caused by the Coronavirus pandemic.
The 2022 Show is likely to be on the last Monday in May, the Spring Bank Holiday Monday as this has always been the custom, although this has yet to be announced by the organisers. However, it is expected that SFWI will participate in the 2022 Show.
The WI schedule for 2021 had been created by using the 2020 one and adding two more classes. The rules were adjusted to say that entries could have been made within the previous two years. We are now keeping the same schedule for the 2022 Show.
In case there are any members who have “saved” made items and would wish to enter them in the 2022 Show, we are amending the rules again to say that entries made for either of the two cancelled shows can be entered in the 2022 event; i.e. items made within the previous three years.
The Cranleigh Show, which was planned for Sunday, 4 July 2021 has now been postponed until Sunday, 5 September at Cranleigh Show Ground, Bookhurst Road (Ewhurst Road), Cranleigh, GU6 7DW. The schedule will be added when available.
Edenbridge and Oxted Show
The Edenbridge and Oxted two-day show, planned for the August Bank Holiday weekend 2021, has now been cancelled.
However, the organisers of our WI marquee urge members to start practising for next year’s show which will use the schedule planned for 2020 on the theme ‘Handmade With Love’.
