Judge Training

By July 25, 2019 February 23rd, 2020 Training Page

Various courses have been organised to train members who wish to become judges, either in cookery (baking) or craft within the county. If there is sufficient demand we are also able to organise a course in judging preserves.

Surrey was in need of new craft judges so in 2018 the Federation offered WI members the opportunity to train to become craft judges, tutored by Beryl Havers, a National Federation Craft Judge. Two Surrey members and four from Sussex took on the challenge. The aim was to enable them to acquire the skills, knowledge and understanding required to judge a full range of crafts at County, Federation, Group, WI meeting level and at local shows.

The course consisted of four one-day sessions at SFWI Headquarters along with field work, shadowing an experienced judge at a minimum of three shows with at least six different classes. A detailed portfolio was produced recording the content of each session, a critique of the three show schedules, evidence of all shadow judging carried out with photos, marking and exhibitor feedback, along with a mock report, and finally evidence of showing as a competitor with self-evaluation.

Judge training sessions will be bookable from the What’s On page. Click Training Events to check if there is an upcoming one.
