We’re really excited to announce that this year’s Annual Council Meeting (ACM) will be taking place virtually, enabling more members than ever before to attend.

The ACM is an opportunity to come together and reflect on the last year and vote on key federation business. Not only this but it’s also an opportunity to hear from a range of inspiring guest speakers, with 2021 seeing us being joined by NFWI Chair, Lynne Stubbings and writer, Joanna Foat.

Lynne will be looking forward in her talk, entitled: ‘A vision for the future of the WI’. Lynne has been an NFWI trustee since 2008 and was elected as NFWI Chair in 2017. She joined Wishaw WI in Warwickshire in 1979, holding many posts including President before going on to serve various roles at Warwickshire Federation, including as a WI Adviser and Chairman.

Joanna will be telling members all about her book, ’The Lumberjills: Britain’s forgotten Army’. The book tells the inspiring story of the young women who felled trees with an axe and saw for the nation during World War Two. The Women’s Timber Corps, an unknown branch of the Women’s Land Army, comprised thousands of women who brought gender stereotypes crashing down in the 1940s. Among the first women to wear trousers in Britain, they also pioneered a change in women’s fashion. We’ll hear how Joanna travelled the country to meet the original Lumberjills and worked with BBC Countryfile, How We Won The War, The Wartime Farm and The Great British Menu to uncover their wartime stories.

Here is the programme for the morning.

Each WI is invited to send one delegate. Other WI members are most welcome, with no limit in the number of tickets requested by each WI. Tickets for this event all are free.
